Alternative network licensing possible??
Hi Cliff,
I would like to start this thread for two issues we in Germany are faced with regarding the network license: 1. Checking out licenses A request we often hear, even from universities, is that they want to check out licenses from the network to enable students to work at home. We don´t offer commercial network licenses, because our end users will typically use the software "on the road". 2. HASP network bug We are told from several universities, that there is a bug in Aladins network license manager: If the license server is running in a different subnet mask than the clients are, the license service immediately stops once or twice a weeks and has to be restarted. Especially one university is complaining, because they have running about 30 license managing program on one license server and if they have to restart this server twice a week, that means also that all the other 30 programs can´t be used in a propeor way. They are very experienced with network software and confirmed, that this is not a FLexsim, but a HASP problem. I would like to know, of other countries are facing these problem s too, and if so, if there is a chance to change the network license management to some "state of the art" technology. I'm curious if any of the universities experiencing the problem have contacted Aladdin about the issue. If so, what was Aladdin's response?
What do you mean by "state of the art technology"? Aladdin claims that HASP's revenues are growing and that it remains the #1 software protection solution on the market. They even back that claim with the following references. *Source: Frost & Sullivan World Content Protection and Digital Rights Management Markets Doc #N1AF-70, March 2007 and IDC Worldwide Hardware Authentication Token 2005-2009 Forecast & 2004 Vendor Shares Doc#34452, December 2005 I personally do not like the dongle solution, but I appear to be in the minority based on the feedback I have been getting over the last few months... |

Hello,
about the "check out licenses" issue, i`ve tried a work around solution when needed to work at home but didn't had a hasp dongle to take home, using a VPN to emulate a lan on internet. Using a software called hamachi i can create a virtual lan and log in and out whenever i need to work at my home with flexsim. regards. Pablo Concha E. |

I am also facing the issue where students would like to work from home. It is not good to work through VPN, as the students might able to access the school network after graduation.
Having check out scheme is good, but must be adminstrate by school and must be timed. David

I like the way, how "Enterprise Architect" does the checking out:
The network admin sets a time, e.g. three days, and if you check out a license to a notebook, you can´t use it on the network for these three days, but you can use it on the notebook without any internet connection at all. After three days, it automatically returns to the license server without connecting the notebook to the network again. So there´s no need to check in the license again. What do you think about that solution? Best wishes Ralf aka ralle |
