Default questions about installation in vista

I'm trying to install flexsim 4 in a vista system. I'm wondering if I have to install VS 2003, or any higher version. Because vista has some problems with installation of VS 2003.
Thanks.

Hi,

No, you do not need to install VS2003 to use Flexsim.

If you think you need to compile your model or use C++ in your model you need a C++ compiler.
If you use Flexsim 4.32 use Visual C++ 2008 Express, you can download it from Microsoft and it is free.
The link is: http://www.microsoft.com/express/default.aspx

I'm going to try to save a few tech support calls. If anyone downloads Visual C++ 2008 Express (which I highly recommend, by the way) and wants to use it to compile C++ code in a model, they must first go to Flexsim 4>Flexsim Compiler Configurator in the start menu and select Visual C++ 2008 Express (not just Visual Studio 2008 (Standard or Professional)) then press OK.

Thanks.
I already install vc++ express version successfully.
But I have another problem. When I activate the license, it is required to give version code and additional licensed code. I have a local license with the USER NAME and USER CODE on it only. How can I activate the license successfully? I appreciate your help.

Hi,

Go to https://account.flexsim.com/downloads and login with your User Name and User Code.
Click on Download Flexsim 4.32 Full Install and on the new page look at License Activation, there
you have all the information you need to activate Flexsim.

Sorry to bother again.
I had another problem when compiling. Attached is the msg when I tried to compile a model which is correct in old version. Actually this msg appears every time when I click compile. No matter which button I click, the compilation is not completing successfully. I installed everything (Flexsim 4.32, VC++ 2008 Express, HAPS driver) in my laptop in a vista system first (in administrator account). Even when I installed everything in a desktop of a windows XP system (also in administrator account), the exactly same problem is still there. I don't know what happened with my computers or with the key. Please help me to check it out. I appreciate your help.

Hi,

Have you installed Flexsim in the "program files" directory? Because if you have, vista is very (and I mean very) protective about the program files directory.

It has been posted before but I couldn't find it, so what is said was that it is a better solution to create a directory somewhere else on your harddisk where you install Flexsim, so for instance "C:\Flexsim"
The problem is probably that Visual studio cannot write into program files.
Another problem of using the program files directory is that it creates sort of dummy directories of "userprojects" and "libraries". So it looks like you put your stuff under program files but it is actually somewhere else. Very annoying also.

Steven

Hi,

I have not personally yet used Vista so I am no help here.
What I heard you should not install programs under Program File,
use another directory. For example that Steven suggested.

Vista have something called UAC and that is controlling what you
are allowed to do even if you are admin. Try to turn it off and try
again to compile, it may work. If not try to install into different
directory.

Hi Ning,

How did you solve this problem?
Installed in a new directory or turned off UAC?

Maybe you downloaded the trial version instead of the free version?

Default Visual C++ 2008 Express and pathes in Vista

We just tried to install VC++ 2008 Express under Vista Ultimate 64 bit and it took us some time to find out the following:
We installed in the default directory ("program files") and assumed, that we just had to choose VC++ 2008 Express Edition in the Flexsim Compiler Configurator to get it running. that was wrong, because the pathes seem tobe different in Vista:

The first one (Visula Studio Install Path) has to be changed to:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0"

The second one (Platform SDK Install Path) can remain default:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A

For some reason Vista adds the (x86) to the first path. Hope that saves some of you some time.

Best wishes
